MICHAEL TEMME

The man

Michael Temme was born in Hanover. He began his "opera-career" at the age of 13 as an extra at Hanover State Opera. Later he studied at the University for Music and Theater in his native city. At the age of 23 he started working as an assistant director at the opera house in Essen.

After fixed engagements in Hagen and Dortmund he worked 12 years as a freelance oprea director. In 1991 he was appointed professor of opera performance and direction at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna (mdw), where he taught until 2009.

Michael Temme lives with his family in his adopted home, Vienna. He loves travelling and is always on the look-out for new adventures, challenges and exciting opera projects.

The Career

He has directed more than 90 productions as a visiting director in cities like Augsburg, Bern, Bremerhaven, Dortmund, Essen, Giessen, Hagen, Hamburg, Kaohsiung (Taiwan), Kaiserslautern, Krefeld, Linz, Lübeck, Marseille, Münster, Saarbrücken, San Juan (Puerto Rico), Wellington (Neuseeland), Shanghai and Vienna.

From 1988 until 1991 he was chief stage director at the opera in Essen.
From 1978 until 1988 he was a freelance opera director.
From 1975 until 1978 he was chief stage director at the Municipal Theatre in Dortmund.
In 1973 he was appointed director at the Hagen Opera, where he staged and staged his first productions.
He gained experience as an assistant director with productions in Buenos Aires, San Francisco, Lyon, Mailand, the festival of Orange and in many cities throughout Germany.

The Teacher

2017 guest professor at the East China Normal University Shanghai
2016 guest professor at the Geidai University Tokyo.
From 2012 until 2016 he retured to the Vienna Music University as guest professor. He staged Le Nozze di Figaro with several student casts at the Palace Theater Vienna (Schönbrunn) which later went on tour.
In 2014 and 2015 he directed master classes in opera performance at the ISA Opera Vienna.
From 2010 until 2014 he directed several workshops at the Trossingen Music University.
In 2009 he retired - at his own request - from his professorship at the Vienna Music University in order to intensify his work on international opera projects with students and young singers.

From 2007 until 2014 he taught as a guest professor at the East China Normal University in Shanghai. Along with several semi-scenic productions he staged La finta giardiniera, The Telephone, Gianni Schicchi and Le Nozze di Figaro at two main theaters in Shanghai.
In
2000 and 2001 he staged Le Nozze di Figaro and La finta giadiniera at the well-known BASOTI opera workshop in San Francisco.
In
1993,1997 and 2006 he staged Cosí fan tutte, La Cenerentola and Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Rheinsberg castle chamber opera festival.
From 1991 until 1994 he taught at the University of Music in Würzburg.
In 1989 he was appointed professor at the department of voice and music-theater at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna.
In
1988 he was head of direction at the Bayreuth Festival international youth meeting.
In 1982 he began teaching the opera class at the University for Music Detmold.
